AC Repair Vs. AC Replacement - How Do You Know When It’s Time

RH Business Marketing Solutions

Given that it’s looked after accordingly, your AC system can last for at least two decades. It can also last longer if the filters and air ducts are properly maintained. Unfortunately, most homeowners don’t think about AC unit repair and maintenance until it’s too late — when it starts blowing hot and humid air.

Looking after your AC system is not as straightforward as most homeowners perceive it to be. This is especially true if you do not have any basic knowledge about air conditioners and how they work. What makes things even trickier is you need to know when to have the unit repaired or replaced.

AC Repair Vs. AC Replacement

In a nutshell, AC repair involves taking care of any issue, such as water leaks and unusual noises. It is done to ensure it works efficiently and lasts for a long time. AC replacement, on the other hand, involves updating parts of the unit or replacing the entire system. When needing to make a repair, make sure you contact AC repair Springfield, OH.

When Is AC Repair Needed?

Just like home repair, several factors need to be considered to ensure it’s what your AC needs. Some of the key factors include:

  • Breakdowns are rare. Repairs are typically the likely option if your AC unit only has a few breakdowns.

  • AC is less than a decade old. If the unit is less than ten years and the damage is not extensive, repair is often the solution. If done right, repairing the system can make it work like new.

  • Cooling capacity matches your space. As long as the AC unit matches the cooling capacity of your space, it can provide optimal cooling capacity. Otherwise, cleaning and repair might be needed.

  • Unit has a high SEER rating. SEER, or Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, measures the unit’s performance or cooling efficiency. The higher the SEER rating, the more efficient the unit is. Also, the higher the SEER rating, the more durable it is and the less likely it would need to be replaced immediately.

When Is AC Replacement Needed?

AC replacement is often the recommended option in the following scenarios:

  • AC is more than ten years old. If the unit is over a decade old, it won’t often function as efficiently as it used to. In most cases, replacing it is considered ideal. This is especially true if you want a new one that’s more energy-efficient.

  • Extensive damage on major components. If important parts like the condenser, compressor, and blower motor have serious damage, replacing the unit is the best option.

  • AC unit has a low SEER rating. A low SEER rating means the unit is not as functional and efficient as you want it to be. In similar cases, replacing the unit is considered ideal as you can end up spending more on the electricity bills.

  • AC size does not match your space. The size of your AC should be in proportion to the size of your space. It won’t be as energy efficient if it is too big or too small. It can also affect the unit’s longevity.
